Best known as the Olivia from Sesame Street and my old favorite Rose on 227. She was a great kind actor who also married Kevin Peter Hall, the original Predator, who died of AIDS at I time where people were more ignorant.

No TV for You!

I wnet for a new camera instead of a new HDTV.

The reason is simple most movies are awful and most TV shows are barely watchable. Now with the cancellation of soaps and the lack of 10 pm dramas their is less reason to huddle in my cave.

Plus a camera, theoretically, will make me more social. I shutter the thought.

But the 3 shows that are still on had great endings.

Glee was perfect with all their wrapping up of story lines.
Californication was great with emotional bombs going off left and right.
Dexter should sweep the award show, especially with John Lithgow as Trinity.

The Blackout

Back on August 14, 2003 there was a major east coast blackout. The power was out in my area for a little over a day. Some places were without power for 10+ days.

I was working in Lower Manhattan close to the World Trade Center when the lights went dark. The boss announced that the whole neighborhood was out and to go home by walking past the World Trade Center zone. By the time I reached the subway I walked halfway down the steps when I noticed it was the blackest black I ever saw.

If the subway was dark I thought so is the entire city. Walking to Union Square people with cars blasted their stereos with news that most of the east coast was out. Every payphone was working but full of anxious callers. Nearly every cell phone was non-functional.

I decided to walk back home over the bridge to my section of Brooklyn, it was about 8 miles (13 km). It was also in the high 90s and high humidity. All I had was half a bottle of warm water and about $50.

The only criminal activity I saw was frozen water being sold at five times normal value.

By the time I got home a few hours later I went to a local pizzeria ordered some slices and soda. They used two ovens one a wood burner the other a gas burner both worked well. My apartment uses natural gas stoves so it also was unaffected and I didn't open he fridge so nothing spoiled.

I spent the night listening to my Sony Walkman and staring at the star filled sky. The day brought electricity and TV. It was a good time New Yorkers acted like they always do with calm and logic.

Is it Summer?

My TV is off after watching the horrible Tim Robbins movie Noise. Also I just finished listening to Loveline online which is part of my daily ritual.

Everything is off and except for the delivery guys dropping off baked goods around the local stores no one is outside.

It has been incredibly cool this summer and near perfect weather for the last few days yet no one is outside.

I recall 15 years ago the streets of Brooklyn was crawling with real noise and robberies and everything from music to murder, attempted murder at least.

Now all day and night there is not one gang of kids or loud girls, no drunken parties or group of cars cruisin'. The few times I've seen groups of one time troublemakers they are huddled around cell phones not noticing I'm carrying a bag of quarters or holding a decent camera. Of course I'm not looking for trouble but has the cell phone and internet done what TV could never do.

Got kids so fat and lazy they are no longer a threat.

I've actually seen a group of teens using laptops on the street and subway and no one even looks at them funny.

Summer meant one thing noise and adventure, I planned months in advance to avoid all noise and adventures. It seems now I'm a risk taker if I want to see an event live rather than online. Talking about a new exhibit at the MET someone told me "yeah I saw that it was pretty cool." I thought that was something since the exhibit hasn't opened,"Did you get to go to preview event". She responded "No, I saw it online it's better because you avoid the crowds and ticket cost."(Tickets are suggested fees so if you want to pay $0.25 it's fine)

Really? A 2,000 year old gold statue is best seen online from your 10 inch laptop, while texting and listening to your iPod.


It's a draw a nicer quieter city but dumber citizens.

Plain not Plane

So I took trip to the city yesterday looking for some decent sneakers or join the 20th century with a simple cell phone. Didn't find either. Did find a nice belt(similar not exact) for under $20 at Macy's. I decided to take a picture of the Starbuck's in Macy's because all the cool bloggers are doing it.

This is a tiny spot inside a high traffic clothing store so it was interesting seeing a lady passed out in the corner. I did not have anything as I've been in more of a Dunkin' Donuts coffee mood for a while.

So why the plain old boring picture?
I always carry a camera for movie, TV, or other film projects going on or maybe a some beautiful scene of this fair city. Since I didn't have anything to shoot I decide might as well just take a picture of something.

Then I get home turn on the TV and see a plane in the river. Soon dozens of amazing photos are being sent all over the news. If it was slightly warmer I may have been in the area but it was cold and even if I were there I tend to react slowly when the temperature is 3 degrees below deadly.

Everyone survived as you heard by now and here is my favorite picture by a guy in the right place.

Free Starbucks plus an election

Image by Getty Images via DaylifeNo shows are on tonight because of all the election coverage. This morning the polling place was light, lots of old women trying to help move the line quickly.

Those voting usually get a sticker except for my little neighborhood that has never happened. With these stickers you can get a free Krispy Kreme donut but even without it you can get a free tall coffee at Starbucks.

Oh yeah plus we get a new president.

The Daily Show will be doing some comedy live special at 10:00pm everything else is repeated.

By the way Nader is still on the ballot.

Exclusive on the Set: Royal Pains

While I was rushing to get to class I did get some pictures before a charged another person with a mission, take as many pictures as possible. Now I don't want to fail the person let's just say I would've done things different.

First they brought out a coffin.

Never mind it was a camera crane.

They are instructing the extras.

Oooooh the camera is out looks like everyone is excited.

And now the filming begins.

And there done, it's over. From what I gather this is the scene where the Doc gets fired from the Brooklyn ER for treating a poor patient over a rich one. 24 hrs for a 15 second scene.

Playing Tourist

Occasionally because of my 12 hour a day TV habit and then months of mind numbing engineering workload I forget I live in NYC.

So to keep it real I play tourist. Last time it was at Governors Island now Saturday it was at the American Museum of Natural History, then a quick pass through Central Park, and finally see what's new a the Columbus Circle.

Thanks all that is great in technology because even with my 3 year old camera I took 542 images. For those of you not old enough to remember if this were film it could take a backpack full of boxes and about $100 in 1982 money.

On to the Rose Center for Earth and Space where I saw Cosmic Collision.
It was the best documentary I've seen in a while, narrated by Robert Redford.

Regular rhinos, they have such sad eyes.

Right before the last call at 5:45PM I took this picture of frogs in action, these are stuffed.

Across the street in Central Park they were given balloon rides.

For $25 you can go up on a tethered balloon and hope the line doesn't break.

Ok, I got no idea why this bride was dragging her dress through the park but the bottom of the dress was filthy.

At the Columbus Circle Time-Warner shopping Center we are remind that it ain't a mall.

Street scene a must when talking about NYC.

Inside the mall shopping center very nice, but none of the books I wanted were there.

I saw four exhibits in the AMNH but I had a ticket if you didn't have one it would be about $80. Plus a simple lunch in the museum cost about $25. Just a fair waring.
